KPN grows net profit on revenues down 3% in Q1

Dutch operator KPN reported first-quarter revenues down 2.9 percent year-on-year to EUR 1.29 billion. Adjusted EBITDA was down just 0.9 percent to EUR 599 million, and the net profit rose 18 percent to EUR 141 million.

Revenues fell especially in the B2B market, down 8 percent to EUR 440 million, while consumer revenues fell 1.4 percent to EUR 702 million. Only wholesale revenues were higher, up 5.4 percent to EUR 161 million. 

In terms of customers, KPN gained 4,000 postpaid mobile subscribers in the three months, but the total postpaid base was still down 0.7 percent on an annual basis. Consumer mobile service revenues fell 0.7 percent year-on-year, better than the 2.1 percent drop in Q4. 

The number of customers taking both fixed and mobile services (FMC) rose by 4,000 compared to December. In total, 1.478 million households had a FMC package at the end of March. 

The consumer market otherwise showed a stable number of households as customers and ARPA improved 2.0 percent year-on-year to EUR 58. ARPA at FMC households was up 1.0 percent to EUR 81.

KPN added 47,000 fibre broadband customers, more than double the growth in Q4, while the total broadband base was down by 1,000.

In the business market, broadband growth slowed to 1,000 new customers, while the mobile base rose by 23,000 Sims. 

KPN said it added 106,000 households to the FTTH network in the quarter and 77,000 households were activated. It also announced a good start to its latest cost savings programme, with a reduction in operating costs of EUR 21 million in Q1.
