KPN has tested 5G applications at the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam. This is one of the Dutch operator's 5G Field Labs, where it's working on smart city applications. Services for consumers will be tested from next year.
The Amsterdam arena will be one of the locations for the Euro 2020 football tournament, and KPN is helping to bring new technology to the site, along with partners such as Nokia and VCS. Services are being developed to help reduce waiting times and improve security at the stadium, for example using connected cameras to help direct foot traffic to and from the station and local public transport.
KPN deployed an experimental 5G network with Nokia, providing high network capacity and low latency. The network supports the deliver of high-resolution camera images in real time. A test licence for the 3.5 GHz band was issued to support the trial.
Next year, the partners will work on using the 5G network to enhance the fan experience and build a '5G street' in the area to test consumer services.
