KPN has started the renewal of its mobile core network with Ericsson, in a move the carrier says will improve the quality of 5G connections. KPN added that the upgrade will bring about lower latency, more reliability and smarter applications such as network slicing.
KPN noted it applies a multi-vendor policy. For the edge of the network, it still cooperates with Huawei. For the implementation of the new mobile core network for 5G, the operator is working with Ericsson, under a recently signed deal.
Technical implementation before year-end
The first tests have been successfully completed. Data sessions and conversations were held between multiple locations and autonomous vehicles were connected to the new network. Technical implementation will start before year-end. After that, the current mobile core network will be phased out step by step.
KPN has been offering 5G since the end of July, when it brought out three business 5G services, highlighting application priority, coverage on demand and guaranted bandwidth.
Telecompaper is organising the Telecom Insights 2020 virtual conference on 26 November. One of the speakers is Jacob Groote, EVP 5G Business Market at KPN. During his presentation, Groote will discuss the benefits of 5G for the business market, such as healthcare.
