Lenovo grows Q4 profit 90% to USD 127 million

Chinese PC and mobile device maker Lenovo reported sales up 4 percent to USD 7.8 billion in its fiscal fourth quarter to 31 March, compared to a year earlier. The company achieved market-beating PC shipments and smartphone sales increased by 3.7 on last year, according to chairman and CEO Yang Yuanqing. Operating profit rose by 67 percent to USD 169 million and earnings increased by 90 percent to USD 127 million. Lenovo’s basic EPS reached 1.22 US cents in the fourth quarter. The company has declared a final dividend of 1.81 US cents for the fiscal year.

Global laptop sales decreased 2 percent to USD 4.2 billion, while unit shipments rose by 0.4 percent against the backdrop of a 14.2 percent overall industry decrease. Desktop PC sales decreased 2 percent to USD 2.4 billion, with shipments flat, compared to a 12.2 percent industry decline in shipments. Lenovo claimed second place in China’s smartphone market. Smartphone and tablet sales rose 74 percent to USD 376 million in the quarter. Shipments increased by 206 percent in the fourth quarter, compared to a 117 percent rise in the Chinese smartphone market.

Yang Yuanqing said the group would focus future investments on the tablets, smartphones and enterprise hardware, while working to enhance profitability in the core PC business.
