LG to unveil new flagship phone 24 Feb, teases new form of gesture control

LG Electronics announced plans to unveil its next flagship smartphone on 24 February in Barcelona, just ahead of the start of Mobile World Congress. The video invite sent out to the media suggests the company is planning a new type of gesture control on the smartphone. Market watchers expect the device to be called the G8 ThinQ. 

The 10-second video invitation sent to global media shows a hand making sweeping motions above a white piece of paper to reveal the message 'Good-bye Touch'. This suggests the company is planning a new interface that allows users to operate the phone without physical contact.

Yonhap news agency said local news reports in Korea point to LG showcasing a dual connected display screen at MWC, joining the race to target the premium market with new form factors. Samsung Electronics is expected to take the wraps off its own flagship and its first foldable phone a week before LG's event, on 20 February.

LG G8 smartphone to feature OLED screen that doubles up as speaker

Just a week ahead of its official unveiling at MWC 2019, LG has announced that its new flagship G8 ThinQ smartphone will feature Crystal Sound OLED (CSO) technology that turns the screen into a speaker. Developed in-house by LG, CSO repurposes the OLED display as a diaphragm, vibrating the entire surface to produce sound "with impressive volume". The surface also combines with the bottom speaker to create a 2-channel audio setup that provides a "full-bodied stereo performance".

LG adopts Infineon chip for 3D facial recognition on G8 smartphone

LG Electronics announced that it's worked with Infineon Technologies to introduce a new type of 3D facial recognition on its upcoming G8 ThinQ smartphones. Infineon's REAL3 image sensor chip will play a key role in the front-facing camera of the phone, creating a new method of biometric identification to unlock the device.

LG mobile losses widen in Q4 as revenues fall 42%

LG Electronics confirmed a drop in fourth-quarter results, due to growing losses at its mobile phone business. The company said it plans to focus on 5G and new form factors as well as core markets going forward, in an effort to turn around the smartphone business.

LG Electronics CEO says no plans to exit smartphone business

LG Electronics will retain its loss-making smartphone business as it plays an important role in the company's internet of things (IoT) ecosystem, the company's CEO said at a press conference at CES. Its portfolio in the automotive and home appliance sectors is related to smartphones, so the group does not plan to exit the smartphone business, said Jo Seong-jin, the Korea Times reports from Las Vegas.

LG operating profit falls sharply in Q4 despite slightly higher revenues

LG Electronics released some preliminary figures for the fourth quarter and full-year of 2018. For the quarter, revenues for the quarter reached nearly KRW 15.8 trillion, an improvement from the 15.43 trillion reported in the previous quarter, and the 16.8 trillion recorded the year before. The operating profit however sank to KRW 75.3 billion from 749 billion sequentially and 367 billion year-on-year.

LG unveils mid-range Q9 smartphone in Korea

LG Electronics announced the release of its Q9 smartphone, featuring key elements from flagship models such as an AI camera and the LG Pay mobile payment system. The 6.1-inch smartphone will be available in South Korea from 11 January for KRW 499,400 ((USD 444), reports Yonhap news agency.
