Line & family apps top 1 bln downloads worldwide

Mobile messaging services provider Line is celebrating its third anniversary. Line has also announced that the total number of downloads for Line and Line family apps topped the 1 billion mark. Line also reports the most used family app worldwide is Line camera, which allows users to edit and modify photos. Line Game dominates the top five in the category ranking how many days it took each app to reach ten million downloads. In addition to games featuring the Line characters, other popular apps include Line Cookie Run, and Line: Disney TsumTsum, which is only available in Japan.

Initially launched in 2011, Line was a simple messenger app offering only a chat feature. Free calling and stickers followed soon after. Since 2012, a series of Line Game titles, Line Play, and other apps known as “family apps” were integrated with Line. There are currently 63 family apps in all.

Line family apps offer games and apps featuring tools for everyday life. Apart from the Line app itself, the series also features the avatar-based communication app Line Play, as well as the security software Line Antivirus. Other family apps include Kids Video with a library of kids’ shows for parents to watch with their children, while Line Mall allows users to buy and sell items.

Pakistani mobile operator Mobilink has launched the Line messenger app on the local market. Mobilink customers can now use the Line OTT messenger app without data charges. App users interact with each other through the use of text messages, stickers, as well as audio and video content. Alibaba, Softbank to acquire 30% stakes in Line - report

Chinese e-commerce group Alibaba and Japanese mobile operator SoftBank are in talks to invest in or sign a partnership agreement with Japanese messenger app Line, South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo reports, citing an unnamed high-ranking source in Naver. Line files for IPO in Tokyo

Mobile messaging app Line has filed for an initial public offering in Tokyo. Line's parent company, South Korean internet group Naver confirmed that it had made the filing after numerous media reports.
