Mcel, Vodacom and Movitel gain spectrum in 4G auction

Mozambique mobile operators Mcel, Vodacom and Movitel have been informed that they will be able to provide 4G services, after bidding in the auction for frequency spectrum, the Director-General of the Communications Regulatory Authority (INCM) told A Verdade. The auction will allocate frequencies in the 800 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2600 MHz bands. Americo Muchanga revealed that all the spectrum in the 800 MHz band was acquired by the mobile operators.

He added that operators have a period of 20 days to make a payment equivalent to 34 percent of the spectrum for which they bid, before being granted the relevant licences.

Viettel restores services in Mozambique after Cyclone Idai

Mozambican mobile operator Movitel says it has generally restored services following Cyclone Idai, which wreaked havoc in the country, killing thousands of people and caused extensive damage. Movitel said it has recovered 75 percent of its base transceiver stations and the remaining stations are in the process of being restored. It said it expects that by 30 March, weather-related incidents will be completely remedied and the whole telecommunications system in Mozambique will be recovered.

Mozambique's mCel and TDM complete merger

Mozambique's state-owned telecoms operators Telecomunicacoes de Mocambique (TDM) and mCel have completed their merger and created Mozambique Telecom, or simply Tmcel, O Pais reported. Their merger was decided by the Council of Ministers in the second half of 2016 to rescue them from the verge of bankruptcy through lack of sustainability and high debts.

Mozambique reaches 13.6 million mobile subscribers at end-2017, up 4%

The number of mobile telephony subscribers in Mozambique reached 13.6 million at the end of 2017, a 4 percent growth compared with the previous year, according to the annual report of Mozambique's Communications Regulatory Authority (INCM). Of the total, 99 percent were pre-paid and the remaining 1 percent postpaid. Vodacom was still the market leader with a 41.9 percent share (-0.45%).

Mozambique earns USD 83.4 million from frequency auction

The state of Mozambique has earned USD 83.4 million from the auction spectrum rights in the 800 MHz, 1800 MHz and 2.6 GHz frequency bands. Three local operators Vodacom Mocambique (VM), Movitel and Mcel (Mocambique Celular) took part in the auction. In the end only the 800 MHz band was awarded as there were no bids for the other frequencies.

The Communications Regulatory Authority (INCM) and the Mozambican Civil Aviation Institute (IACM) have signed a memorandum of understanding, which aims to unite and coordinate efforts to ensure and promote the safe management of the radio frequency spectrum. The purpose of this memorandum is to establish a technical-administrative cooperation mechanism, designing specific modalities and areas for cooperation and planning, organisation and execution of coordination activities.
