MediaTek reported second-quarter sales of TWD 125.7 billion, up 86 percent year-on-year and 16 percent higher than the previous quarter, thanks to the sharp expansion of the 5G smartphone market. The company's net profit more than tripled year-on-year, to TWD 27.6 billion or TWD 17.44 per share.
In addition to the growing 5G demand, MediaTek said it was profiting from the increase in market share of Wi-Fi 6 products and its expansion into more consumer electronics markets. The company's gross margin was up 1.3 percent points from Q1 and 2.7 points higher year-on-year at 46.2 percent. Despite an increase in sales costs and R&D spending, operating profit rose 289 percent on an annual basis to TWD 28.8 billion.
Net operating cash flow rose nearly four-fold from a year ago, to TWD 28.1 billion.
