Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has unveiled its AI Research SuperCluster (RSC) supercomputer, aimed at accelerating AI research and helping the company build the metaverse. Meta said the RSC will help the company build new and better AI models, working across hundreds of different languages, and to develop new augmented reality tools. The supercomputer should be the fastest in the world once fully built out in mid-2022.
Meta also announced it will be shifting the way it reports its segments from 2 February, when it reports its results for the fourth quarter of 2021. Meta said it will report revenue and profit/loss for its Family of Apps (FoA) and Reality Labs (RL) segments. The first category will include Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and other services, with Meta still showing total ad revenue and ad revenue by user geography. The second category will include augmented and virtual reality related consumer hardware, software and content.
The company added that it will provide historical segment information for all quarters of 2021, the fourth quarter of 2020, and full years 2019, 2020 and 2021.
