Microsoft announces official end of Windows 10 Mobile

Microsoft will no continue developing new features or hardware for Windows 10 Mobile, according to a series of tweets from head of operating systems Joe Belfiore. The operating system has been placed into servicing mode, with bug fixes and security updates for existing users.

Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform has been dead for over a year, but the company has never officially admitted it before. According to Belfiore, Microsoft will not put out any new hardware with Windows 10 Mobile.

Since 2012, market watchers had expected the company would also produce smartphones under the Surface name. At the end of last year, word had gone out that prototypes of the Surface Phone were in production. In May of this year, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella intimated that Microsoft would come back with a market-changing smartphone. But now it seems that Microsoft has pulled the plug also from this project.

Microsoft offers its services, such as Office and Skype, also for other platforms such as Android and iOS. Despite the acquisition of Nokia Mobile, Microsoft has never been able to break into the smartphone market, where Android & Apple are kings. The Lumia smartphones stopped going on sale at the start of this year.
