Millicom to bring Netflix to LatAm smartphone users

Millicom and Netflix have announced a strategic partnership to bring Netflix app preloads to Android smartphones from TigoSmart and offer promotions to TigoStar and TigoSmart customers in Latin America. In a statement, Millicom said the deal would allow Tigo and TigoUNE customers to easily find the Netflix app preloaded on their Android smartphones and discover a diverse range of movies and TV shows from the Netflix catalogue to enjoy at home and on the move. Qualifying Tigo customers will receive a prepaid Netflix subscription with the purchase of select TigoSmart mobile and TigoStar residential plans.

The new Netflix-based on-demand subscriptions will be offered alongside the TigoSports and TigoMusic entertainment packages, said Millicom, adding that the service would help grow its appeal to high value customers. The company serves over 2.5 million homes and more than 32 million mobile customers across 7 countries in Latin America.

Tigo-UNE service revenues down 2.9% to USD 402 mln in Q3

Colombian operator Tigo-UNE, owned by Luxembourg-based Millicom, reported third-quarter service revenues down 2.9 percent year-on-year on an organic basis to USD 402 million, affected by challenging economic conditions and intense competition in the mobile sector above all. Milicom sees Netflix deal boosting mid-high end plans

Milicom said its recent deal with Netflix aims to encourage clients on basic contracts to migrate to its mid to high-end mobile plans that include the service, boosting average revenue per user (ARPU). Millicom lowers FY growth outlook as sales slow in Q2

Millicom has lowered its outlook for annual sales growth due to difficult economic conditions in some of its markets.
