Nearly fifth of Dutch consumers use mobile payments

Dutch consumers are getting more interested in mobile payments, according to research from the Telecompaper Consumer Insights Panel. Nearly one in five said they can already pay with their smartphone (19%), up from 11 percent a year ago.

Android Pay and Apple Pay are available from most major banks in the country. However, contactless bank cards have proven more popular for payments than smartphone apps. Around a third of consumers said they are not interested in mobile payments, a figure stable over the past year.

A preference for mobile payments is higher for certain transactions, notably parking (15%), transport tickets (14%) and small supermarket purchases (14%). However, contactless bank cards score much higher for all types of purchases, from vending machines (39%) to public transport (46%).
