Nest launches more affordable smart thermostat

Nest has released a new, more affordable version of its smart thermostat. The Nest Thermostat E (for 'everyone') will sell for a recommend price of USD 169 compared to around USD 250 for the standard Nest.

The device is designed to "quietly blend into the home" rather than make a "bold design statement" like the standard Nest, the company said. The display shows softly glowing text and graphics, and when off, the frosted display fades into the background.

Like the Nest Learning Thermostat, it turns itself down when the user is out, and the device can be controlled from anywhere with the Nest app. Nest said it offers an average user USD 131-145 in energy savings each year, meaning its cost is paid back within two years.
