Netflix cuts subscription prices in India

Netflix has reduced prices for its subscription plans in India. Netflix aims to expand its customer base on the local market amid intense competition from Disney+Hotstar, Amazon Prime and other Indian SVoD platforms, The Economic Times reports. Netflix has reduced the price of its mobile plan to INR 149 from INR 199 per month.

The basic plan now costs INR 199 per month, down from INR 499 per month, while the standard plan is available for INR 499 versus INR 649 per month. Customers who take up Netflix’s premium plan will now be charged INR 649 per month, versus INR 799 previously. Those previously on the basic plan will be upgraded to standard automatically, and standard customers will get the premium plan instead, unless they decide to change.

By comparison, Amazon Prime's monthly plan is available for a starting price of INR 129 per month, while Disney+Hotstar charges its subscribers INR 1,499 per year for premium services and INR 499 for Disney+Hotstar mobile.

The new plans are dubbed ‘Happy New Prices’ by the company and come into effect on 14 December.

Amazon Prime is raising its prices in India from the same date. The annual membership increases to INR 1,499 from INR 999 previously, and the monthly plan rises to INR 179 from INR 129.
