Netflix gives first geographic breakdown of subscribers, revenues

Netflix has provided its first breakdown of subscribers and revenues by geographic area. The SEC filing shows the US and Canada remains by far its most important region, with nearly twice the revenues of the next largest region, EMEA.

At the end of September Netflix counted 67.1 million streaming subscribers in the US and Canada, equal to 42.4 percent of its total paid base. Revenues in the region reached USD 7.4 billion in in the first nine months of 2019, compared to just under USD 4 billion in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The EMEA region had nearly 47.4 million subscribers at the end of September, accounting for 29.9 percent of Netflix's total base. These subscribers generated average monthly revenue in the first nine months of 2019 of USD 10.26, compared to ARPU of USD 12.36 in the US and Canada.

ARPU was lower in the two other regions reported by Netflix, at USD 9.31 per month in Asia and USD 8.21 in Latin America. Netflix reported nine-month revenues of just over USD 1 billion in Asia, where it ended the period with almost 14.5 million subscribers, while Latin America contributed USD 2 billion and 29.4 million subscribers.

The figures show Netflix growing ARPU in all regions on a constant currency basis. At real forex rates, ARPU waas down in all regions apart from the US and Canada, where the figure rose 11 percent year-on-year in the first nine months.
