Nokia, Qualcomm complete 5G interoperability in 3.5, 28 GHz bands

Nokia and Qualcomm Technologies have successfully completed interoperability testing in the 3.5GHz and 28GHz spectrum bands using the 3GPP 5G NR Release 15 standard confirmed in December. The tests used the commercially available Nokia AirScale base station and device prototypes from Qualcomm.

The testing at Nokia’s 5G centre of excellence in Oulu, Finland will provide the basis for 5G NR field trials with operators in 2018. Nokia, Qualcomm and operators including BT/EE, Deutsche Telekom, Elisa, KT, LG Uplus, NTT Docomo, Optus, SKT, Telia and Vodafone are already committed to working together in verifying and trialing 5G NR technology. This will be based on the successful interoperability tests of the flexible 5G NR interface from Nokia and Qualcomm.

Qualcomm and Nokia first announced in September 2017 plans to collaborate on 5G NR, and they expect their tests to contribute to widescale 5G deployments in 2019 based on 3GPP standard-compliant 5G infrastructure and devices.

KT, Qualcomm Technologies, and Samsung Electronics have completed multi-vendor 5G NR interoperable testing compliant with the recently completed 3GPP Release-15 Non-Standalone (NSA) 5G NR global standard. Orange taps Kathrein and Nokia for 4G/5G single antenna

German manufacturer Kathrein, a specialist in base station antennas, said that it is working with Nokia on a new antenna that will support Orange's future 5G deployment. The news was confirmed by Orange in its announcement of planned 5G test sites in France and Romania, due to go live in the second half of the year. Currently in prototype phase, the new device will be compact enough to be installed on the operator's existing mobile towers.

Qualcomm shows 5G NR prototype for mmWave spectrum

Qualcomm announced it has a 5G New Radio prototype for mmWave spectrum ready to start tests in the second half of this year. T-Mobile, Nokia, Qualcomm reach 1.175 Gbps during LTE network tests

T-Mobile US said that it has passed gigabit speeds with LTE, together with Nokia and Qualcomm, in a world first. The tests were recently held at T-Mobile's lab, reaching download speeds of 1.175 Gbps on the operator's LTE network, using Nokia's 4.9G network powered by the Nokia AirScale Base Station together with the Snapdragon X20 LTE modem.
