Chinese smartphone producer Oppo unveiled its Oppo RX17 Pro smartphone in Milan. It is Oppo’s second major introduction for the European market this year. In June, Oppo kicked off expansion plans in the European market with the introduction of the Oppo Find X in Paris. Just as with that phone, the new Oppo RX17 Pro will also focus, for the time being, on four European countries, namely Spain, Italy, France and the Netherlands. According to Oppo, consumers in these four countries are most open to new smartphone brands. Further expansion within Europe is on the cards and Oppo expects to launch in the UK by the end of this year or at the start of next year.
With the choice of fashion city Milan as the backdrop for its introduction, Oppo wanted to highlight the design features of the device. The Oppo RX17 Pro is a smartphone that is, in terms of price and specifications, at the high end of the smartphone market. The company also focuses on technical performance, especially for the camera. The design element can especially be seen on the back of the smartphone, with its special '3D fog glass' technology. The color of the back changes from pink to blue no matter how it is viewed.
Similarities with OnePlus 6T
Hardware-wise, the Oppo RX17 Pro is broadly in line with the OnePlus 6T. Both OnePlus and Oppo are part of Chinese electronics multinational BKK. There are some small technical differences between the smartphones, such as what processor is used and how the camera is configured.
The Oppo RX17 Pro is equipped with a 6.4 inch AMOLED display with a Full HD+ resolution. The display has a droplet 'notch' that houses the front camera. Most of the sensors and the loudspeaker are on the edge of the smartphone.
The device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor, a processor for smartphones at the top of the mid-range segment. In addition, the Oppo RX17 Pro has 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage capacity.
Triple camera
The phone is equipped with a triple camera at the rear, consisting of a 20- and a 12-megapixel camera and a 3D TOF camera. The 3D TOF camera is used for depth measurement and can accurately measure the distance to objects for up to 5 metres, with a deviation of less than 1 centimeter. This data is used to build photos in layers and so improve their quality, especially in limited light. At the front, the device has a 25-megapixel camera.
In terms of software, the Oppo RX17 Pro runs on the Color OS 5.2. This software is based on Android 8.1 Oreo. The phone also sports a 3.700 mAh battery with fast charging options.
Sales via open market model
In Europe, Oppo will still mainly focus on the open market model, where sales are performed online and offline by a select number of retail and e-tail partners. In the Netherlands, these partners will be Belsimpel and Mobiel.nl (online) and MediaMarkt (offline).
The Oppo RX17 Pro will be in shops from 15 November for a suggested retail price of EUR 599 in the colours Radiant Mist and Emerald Green.
