Qualcomm introduces Quick Charge 5 for 100W fast charging

Qualcomm announced the release of the latest version of its fast charging technology for smartphones. Qualcomm Quick Charge 5 powers up to 100W fast charging for Android devices, promising a 50 percent charge in just five minutes.

Qualcomm claims this is the world’s first commercially viable fast charging platform to support more than 100W in a smartphone. Quick Charge 5 also uses Qualcomm Battery Saver and the new Qualcomm Smart Identification of Adapter Capabilities technology to support efficient charging and help extend the battery life cycle on a user’s device, the company said.

The new system comes paired with Qualcomm's latest premium-tier power management ICs, the SMB1396 and SMB1398. These support 1SnP and 2SnP batteries, wired and wireless input paths, adaptive operation based on the power source and scalability.

Quick Charge 5 works with both USB Type-C and USB-PD devices and is backwards compatible with previous generations of Qualcomm's fast charging system. It's sampling now with customers and is expected to appear in commercial devices in Q3 running the top-tier Snapdragon 865 and 865 Plus processors.
