Qualcomm unveils LTE modem for IoT
Qualcomm has announced a new modem for developing the Internet of Things over LTE networks. The 9207-1 modem is purpose-built for the IoT in order to be flexible, scalable and cost-optimized, with long battery life. Using the LTE Cat 1 standard, it offers advanced power savings capability, robust hardware and software security, global band support for LTE and support for adding Wi-Fi, including customizable options. It targets applications such as smart metering, security and automation, tracking, wearables and point-of-sale transactions.

The 9207-1 is designed to replace a long list of line items with one comprehensive, integrated chipset. Qualcomm said the product will minimize the need for additional discrete processors, microcontrollers and location components, which means it occupies less space and further reduces the bill of materials. For companies that require heterogeneous network support beyond LTE alone, the 9207-1 comes with pre-integrated support for adding Qualcomm VIVE Wi-Fi (1x1 801.11ac) and Bluetooth 4.1 BLE.
