RIM quarterly sales fall 10%, profit halved
Research In Motion reported revenues for its fiscal second quarter to 27 August down 10 percent from a year earlier, to USD 4.2 billion. During the quarter, RIM shipped 10.6 million BlackBerry smartphones and 200,000 PlayBook tablets. RIM said shipments fell slightly short of expectations, due to lower demand for older models and its new BlackBerry 7 phones launching only late in the quarter. The company generated net profit of USD 329 million or 63 cents a share, down from USD 797 million or USD 1.46 per share a year ago. The result included a one-time charge of USD 118 million for its restructuring programme announced in July. RIM cash position fell to USD 1.4 billion at the end of June, after the company spent USD 780 million to participate in the consortium that bought Nortel's patent portfolio. For fiscal Q3, RIM forecast stronger revenue of USD 5.3-5.6 billion, a gross margin around 37 percent and BlackBerry smartphone shipments between 13.5 million and 14.5 million units. Adjusted EPS, excluding any one-time items, is estimated at USD 1.20-1.40 for the third quarter. For the full year, the company expects adjusted EPS at the low end of its earlier indicated range of USD 5.25-6.00.
