Research In Motion unveiled BlackBerry BBX, its new mobile platform combining its BlackBerry and QNX software that will also support Android apps. The BBX platform will include a new operating system for both smartphones and tablets. It will support BlackBerry cloud services and development environments for both HTML5 and native developers. BBX will also support applications developed using any of the tools available for the BlackBerry PlayBook, including Native SDK, Adobe Air/Flash and WebWorks/HTML5, as well as the BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps. RIM also showed BlackBerry Cascades, a new user interface that will be included in BBX, with support for increased integration of apps, push services and the BBM Social Platform. The company did not say when it expects to have the first devices running the software on the market. RIM also announced at its developers conference in the US a series of developer tool updates, including WebWorks for BlackBerry smartphones and tablets, the Native SDK for the BlackBerry PlayBook and a developer beta of BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 with support for running Android applications. The Developer Beta version of the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 comes with the BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps and the BlackBerry Plug-In for Android Development Tools (ADT), which allow developers to bring Android applications to BlackBerry tablets.
