Samsung announced the start of mass production of the Exynos 7 Dual 7270 processor for wearables, the first application processor based on 14nm FinFET process technology and the first in its class to feature full connectivity and LTE modem integration. The Exynos 7270 is powered by two Cortex-A53 cores and integrates a Cat.4 LTE 2CA modem offering Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, FM (frequency modulation) and location-based services with GNSS (global navigation satellite system).
The company said the Exynos 7270 makes full use of the 14nm process, delivering a 20 percent improvement in power efficiency when compared to its predecessor built on 28nm, significantly extending battery life. Samsung added that the processor uses its packaging technology, SiP (system-in-package)-ePoP (embedded package-on-package) to deliver improved performance and energy efficiency within a compact system optimised for wearable devices.
To speed up the development process, a reference platform comprised of the Exynos 7270 with NFC and various sensors is currently available for device manufacturers and customers.
