Samsung grows Q2 profit 48%
Samsung Electronics saw its second-quarter net profit grow 48 percent year-on-year to KRW 5.19 trillion. The company's sales rose 21 percent year-on-year to KRW 47.60 trillion, and operating profit surged 79 percent to KRW 6.72 trillion.

The company's telecom division grew quarterly sales 60 percent year-on-year to KRW 24.04 trillion, and the division's operating profit was up 145 percent to KRW 4.19 trillion. While Samsung did not release figures on how many phones it sold, the company said smartphone demand grew in the low single digits versus Q1 and feature phones were down slightly sequentially, due to weak seasonality.

Samsung said its own handset sales, ASP and profit were up from Q1 thanks to a higher proportion of smartphones in the sales mix, and shipments grew sequentially following the launch of the Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note in more markets. Samsung expects the handset market to show sequential growth again in Q3, driven by smartphones, emerging markets and a return to modest growth for feature phones.

Samsung's Device Solutions division, which includes the semiconductor and display panel businesses, grew quarterly sales 6 percent to KRW 17.03 trillion, with operating profit at KRW 1.88 trillion, up 18 percent. Samsung said it expects solid demand for mobile components to continue in Q3, but competition will intensify.
