Satellite broadcaster Sky Italia has reached a new wholesale access agreement ahead of its imminent entry into the local fixed broadband market, reports Il Sole 24 Ore. After signing a long-term agreement to use Open Fiber’s networks, the pay-TV company will also be accessing Fastweb’s infrastructure for the early 2020 launch of its broadband service. "We will also be Sky's industrial partner. We have always sold our services to those who request them and Sky is no exception,” said Fastweb CEO Alberto Calcagno at the recent inauguration of the operator’s new Milan HQ.
The report adds that Sky will not only be relying on Fastweb’s FTTH networks but will also be using the operator’s FTTC and fixed-wireless access (FWA) infrastructure to reach the parts of the country not yet covered by Open Fiber’s networks. Sky’s deal with the latter was announced back in March 2018 and gives Sky access to a FTTH network that's set to reach the country’s 271 main urban centres by 2022.
