Sky Italia confirms Open Fiber network deal, to launch broadband service in mid-2019

Pay-TV provider Sky Italia has confirmed plans to enter Italy's broadband market under a long-term agreement for access to the Open Fiber network. Sky said it will offer the fibre-only service from summer 2019, alongside its existing services.

The deal will give Sky access to Open Fiber’s FTTH network, which is set to reach the 271 main urban areas of the country by 2022. Sky said the high-speed connections will support the growing amount of its content delivered and consumed over the internet.

The company already introduced its hybrid set-top box Sky Q at the end of 2017. It will start delivering its TV service to customers via internet from 2019, in addition to the existing satellite service.
