Smartphone shipments hit 295.3 mln units in Q2 - IDC

The worldwide smartphone market reached a record 295.3 million shipments in the second quarter, up 23.1 percent on the second quarter of 2012 and up 2.6 percent on a very strong first quarter, according to IDC. Emerging markets supported by local vendors are continuing to be the main catalyst for smartphone sales. A broad range of Chinese OEMs more than outpaced the market in the second quarter, led by Huawei, which nearly doubled its shipments in a year.

Market leader Samsung shipped 74.3 million smartphones in the period for a 25.2 percent market share, down on 77.3 million units and a 32.3 percent share in the second quarter of 2013. The company shipped 1 million units of its Galaxy S5 smartphone in the quarter, while S4 and S3 volumes remained strong as more affordable alternatives.

Apple sold 35.1 million smartphones for an 11.9 percent share in the second quarter, compared to a 31.2 million units sold and a 13 percent share in the year-earlier period. Apple enjoyed continued success in the BRIC markets, but consumers are awaiting the large screened iPhone 6.

Huawei shipped 20.3 million smartphones for a 6.9 percent market share in the second quarter, versus 10.4 million units and a 4.3 percent share a year earlier. Huawei benefited from subsidised sales of LTE phones by China’s three national carriers. Elsewhere, strong sales of lower-cost Y series phones fuelled growth in most regions.

Lenovo had a record quarter in China and continued to gain traction internationally, where fewer than 5 percent of its smartphones were shipped in the second quarter. It sold 15.8 million smartphones worldwide for a 5.4 percent market share, compared to 11.4 million phones sold and a 4.7 percent share in the second quarter of last year.

LG shipped 14.5 million smartphones for a 4.9 percent share in the second quarter, up on 12.1 million units and a 5 percent share a year ago. It sales were largely driven by its L series, with the L70 performing well in many markets including the US. The launch of the G3 in South Korea at the end of the second quarter is expected to boost volumes in the third quarter.

IDC expects the global smartphone market to pass 300 million units in the third quarter.
