Spain to launch first 5G tender in 3.6 GHz and 1.5 GHz bands in 'early 2018'

Spain's Ministry for Energy, Tourism and the Digital Agenda has announced a series of measures designed to promote the deployment of 5G throughout the country, including a tender in the 3.6 GHz and 1.5 GHz bands “in early 2018”. The country’s 5G National Plan sets out a roadmap to position Spain among the most advanced countries in the development of the new technology, which the ministry said could have a potential economic impact in its automotive, health, transport and public-services sectors of up to EUR 14.6 billion by 2025.

The auction of frequencies in the 3.6 GHz (3600 MHz-3800 MHz) and 1.5 GHz (1452-1492 MHz) bands will enable operators to start carrying out the first innovative 5G projects, said the ministry, adding that no specific date has yet been set for the release of the 700 MHz and 2.6 GHz bands with a view to allowing operators to deliver faster and better services in the run-up to 5G.
