Spanish FTTH growth slows to 41,400 new lines in Covid-affected April

Spanish operators signed up a further 41,397 fibre to the home (FTTH) subscribers in April, well down on previous monthly results due to coronavirus restrictions imposed by the government. The latest official monthly update from regulator CNMC revealed that there were 10.5 million active FTTH connections in the country, up around 1.5 million in the year to end of April, more than offsetting a 1 million decline in DSL lines to 2.3 million. HFC lines fell to 2.2 million, bringing the fixed broadband total to 15.3 million compared to 14.9 million a year earlier.

In terms of operators, some 132,800 numbers were ported in April, down 76.3 percent compared to the year-earlier figure as a result of the Covid-19 lockdown. The Masmovil group led the monthly rankings with 25,800 lines gained across its various brands to reach 10.6 percent of the market. The three main MNOs accounted for 85.2 percent of fixed lines, with Vodafone and its second brand Lowi gaining 2,800 further lines in April to reach 20.9 percent of the market, while Telefonica shed 12,784 lines across its Movistar, Tuenti and O2 brands to end April on 38.9 percent of the market. 

Orange (including Jazztel, Amena and Republica Movil) improved its performance to a 9,164 net loss to end April on 25.5 percent of Spanish fixed lines while Euskaltel shed 1,929 to reach a retain a market share of 4.1 percent.
