Sprint switches on 5G in Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and Kansas City
Sprint has officially launched its 5G network in Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and Kansas City and made available its first 5G-compatible handsets. It also announced plans to turn on 5G in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Phoenix and Washington, DC in the coming weeks, covering around 2,180 square miles and 11.5 million people across all 9 market areas. “Sprint 5G is here and we’re proud to give customers true mobility and the largest initial 5G footprint in the country,” said Sprint CEO Michel Combes, adding that “this is a momentous day and just the start of what we can achieve with T-Mobile.”

The company is using 64T64R (64 transmitters 64 receivers) 5G Massive MIMO radios from Ericsson in Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and Kansas City. The radios support split-mode, enabling Sprint to simultaneously deliver LTE Advanced and 5G NR service on its 2.5 GHz mid-band spectrum, and are deployed on its existing 4G cell sites, providing a nearly identical footprint for both 2.5 GHz LTE and 5G NR coverage.

The first two compatible devices offered by the company from 31 May are the LG V50 ThinQ 5G smartphone and the HTC 5G Hub for home broadband, the latter a US exclusive for Sprint. Samsung’s Galaxy S10 5G phone will also be available for Sprint beginning this summer.

For a limited time, the LG phone will cost USD 24 per month with USD 0 down under the Sprint Flex lease plan, half the regular price, while the HTC 5G Hub will cost USD 12.50 per month. End-users can activate HTC 5G Hub with 100GB of high-speed data for USD 60 per month, the company said.

The operator also announced an Unlimited Premium plan for its 5G-enabled phones with unlimited data, talk and text nationwide, plus Hulu, Amazon Prime, Twitch Prime, Tidal HiFi and 100GB of LTE mobile hotspot.

Finally, Sprint revealed that it’s collaborating with Hatch and offering a free 3-month subscription to the Hatch Premium cloud gaming platform to promote its 5G service.
