Sprint to pay USD 330 mln to settle tax case in New York

Sprint has agreed to pay USD 330 million to settle a False Claims Act lawsuit filed by the Attorney General of New York. The Office of the Attorney General alleged that Sprint failed to pay over USD 100 million in state and local taxes from customers for nearly a decade. The company has been in tax compliance since 2014, Endgadget reported. But before that, the Office of the Attorney said the company deliberately misinterpreted a 2002 law and that it filed false records and statements in order to reduce the price of its statements. Sprint at the time denied the allegations, the Verge reported.

Sprint told Engadget it was “pleased” with the settlement, and that while it disagrees with the conclusions of the AG’s office, it is moving forward “in the best interest of the company.”

The settlement is the “largest-ever recovery by a single state in an action brought under a state false claims act,” the Office of the Attorney said. Most of the money from the fine has already been distributed to the places where it was owed.

The record record fine follows another one of USD 174.2 million, paid by Charter to settle a consumer fraud case, also in New York.
