Telcel obtains 60 MHz of 2.5 GHz spectrum from Ultravision

Mexican mobile operator Telcel (America Movil) has obtained a further 60 MHz of spectrum in the 2.5 GHz band from pay-TV and telecom operator Ultravision, reports business daily El Economista. The transfer was authorised by the country’s telecommunications regulator IFT on the grounds that it didn’t pose a competitive risk in any of the markets involved and didn’t prevent rival companies from obtaining more spectrum.

Telcel didn’t take part in last year’s tender of 120 MHz of spectrum in the 2.5 GHz because it regarded the conditions as unfair and had already acquired capacity in the band from media company MVS Communicaciones back in 2016.

With the newly-obtained frequencies Telcel now has 30.8 percent of Mexico’s available spectrum for mobile services, behind AT&T with 33.6 percent but ahead of Movistar (Telefonica) with 17.4 percent.
