Tele2, Telenor to build common 5G network in Sweden
Swedish operators Tele2 and Telenor entered into an agreement to build a common nationwide network with 5G technology. They aim to offer the first customers access to 5G with full functionality as early as 2020. 

The companies already share 2G and 4G networks via their joint company Net4Mobility. Tele2 and Telenor established Net4Mobility in 2009 to jointly build and operate a national LTE network. The partnership enabled the companies to be first in Sweden with a nationwide LTE network that covers 99 percent of the Swedish population.

PTS refuses to exempt Telenor, Tele2 rural base stations from back-up power rules

Swedish telecoms regulator PTS has refused to grant an exemption to Telenor and Tele2 Sweden to the regulation requiring mobile base stations to have four hours' back-up electricity. They had sought exemptions for their joint venure Net2Mobility for six small villages in Gastrikland, arguing that there was a low risk of any power cuts there, and that one hour's reserve energy should be sufficient.

Net4Mobility grid covers 90% of Sweden, 99.9% of population

Tele2 said its joint Swedish 2G/4G network with Telenor now covers 90 percent of Sweden's territory and 99.9 percent of the population, with improved call quality and more stable internet service for customers nationwide. The two operators began working together under the Net4Mobility umbrella in 2014, when territorial coverage was at approximately 70 percent.

PTS holds 5G conference on 29 May

Swedish postal and telecoms regulator PTS said it is holding a 5G forum at its headquarters on 29 May and anyone wishing to attend should apply by 26 May. The forum will discuss developments and the effect on spectrum use and standardisation. Participants are welcome to get in touch with PTS if there is something they wish to present.

Tele2 Sweden aims to cut 4G energy consumption

Tele2 said it is launching a project to make its 4G network more energy efficient through a range of technical updates and innovations, as well as participation in the global network SooGreen (service-oriented optimisation of green mobile networks). Sweden has a plan to reduce total energy consumption by 20 percent by 2020, and more than 50 percent of the country's energy should come from renewable sources. At Tele2 Sweden, the nationwide 4G network accounts for about 70 percent of total energy consumption

Telenor Norway is holding what it claims is the first Norwegian demonstration of 5G technology on 20 March, starting at 09:00 hrs on the dot. Anyone wanting to attend should register by 14:00 hrs on 17 March. It will take place at Telenor's Fornebu Joint Innovation Centre.

Nordic, Baltic politicians devise common 5G development plan

Officials from the Nordic and Baltic regions have agreed to draw up a common 5G development plan. Swedish Housing and Digitisation Minister Peter Eriksson said the regions are poised to take a lead in developing the new technology, which is important in maintaining Nordic competitiveness. The plan precedes the Digital North conference in Oslo on 25 April under the auspices of the Nordic Council of Ministers.

Swedish PTS probes interest in 5G test licences

The Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) said it is sounding out market interest in licences to conduct 5G tests in two frequency bands as early as 2017. A favourable and enabling environment for 5G development could contribute to strengthening Sweden's position as a leading IT nation, it said.

Tele2 Sweden Q4 results flat excluding TDC, mobile users dip

Tele2 Sweden said total net sales in the fourth quarter of 2016 rose to SEK 4.029 billion from SEK 3.299 billion a year earlier following the takeover of TDC Sweden. The integration of TDC is already under way and progressing well, with a number of key contracts retained, it said. EBITDA increased to SEK 1.028 billion from SEK 946 million in the same quarter last year.

Telenor Sweden criticises prosecutors' data retention stance

Telenor Sweden said it has held talks with district prosecutors who had criticised its decision to stop retaining customer data. It stopped doing so after the European Court of Justice ruled in a case brought by Tele2 Sweden that member states may not impose a general obligation to retain data on providers of electronic communications services. Telenor said it became clear in those talks that the prosecutor had not understood the fact that the operator could not voluntarily decide to continue data retention

Tele2 Sweden top in SKI corporate broadband, telephony lists

Tele2 Sweden said it has come first in the Swedish Quality Index (SKI) ranking of corporate broadband suppliers for the third year in a row, and top for fixed line enterprise telephony for the second consecutive year. The SKI list is complied through a survey of customers. Head of Tele2's corporate services arm, Pernilla Nissler, said its enterprise business has been boosted by the acquisition of TDC's Swedish operations.
