Telefonica Brasil CEO Navarro named global comms director

Telefonica has announced the appointment of Eduardo Navarro, current chairman and CEO of its Brazilian unit, as its new Global Director for Communications, Brand, Public Affairs and Sustainability. The new unit will oversee communication, institutional marketing, global brand policy, sponsorship, as well as the global strategy for public affairs and corporate ethics and sustainability, integrating and managing all of the group's intangible assets, said Telefonica.

Telefonica's current Director of Corporate Communications and Institutional Marketing, Jose Luis Gomez-Navarro will report directly to the group’s chairman and CEO Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete.

The company added that Navarro will continue as chairman of Telefonica Brasil’s board of directors and will continue to support Vivo in institutional and regulatory matters. The current COO of Vivo, Christian Gebara, will take over as chairman and CEO of Telefonica Brasil on 01 January 2019, as well as take up the vacant seat on the Brazilian board of directors.

Telefonica Brasil reports 70% profit drop in Q3

Telefonica Brasil reported a net profit of BRL 965 million in the third quarter, a drop of 70 percent from the 1.3 billion recorded the year before, due to negative tax effects. Telefonica has announced the appointment of Camilo Aya Caro as the new president and CEO of Telefonica Movistar Mexico, replacing Carlos Morales Paulin who is leaving the operator after 17 years, including six years at the helm of the Mexican unit. A Colombian national, Aya Caro has been tasked with consolidating and accelerating the company's recent growth in the highly competitive Mexican communications market.

Telefonica CEO acquires 100,000 company shares

Telefonica's chairman and chief executive officer Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete has acquired a total of 100,000 of the company's shares this week for a total of just under EUR 600,000, reports business daily Expansion, citing data from securities market regulator CNMV. The CEO acquired the shares on 21 August at a unit price of EUR 5.98 to increase his stake in the company from 0.043 to 0.045 percent, with a current market value of around EUR 14 million.

Telefonica has announced the appointment of Eva Fernandez as its new Global Communications Director in a revamp of its Communications, Brand, Public Affairs and Sustainability area. Fernandez is the current COO of digital newspaper El Espanol and will report to Chief Comms, Brand, Public Affairs and Sustainability Officer Eduardo Navarro.

Telefonica Brasil grows Q4 EBITDA 5% on small increase in revenues

Telefonica Brasil (Vivo) ended the fourth quarter of 2018 with net revenues of BRL 11.1 billion, up 0.5 percent from a year earlier, and recurring EBITDA grew 4.6 percent to BRL 4.1 billion. The net profit totaled BRL 1.5 billion, down 2 percent over the same period of the previous year.

Vivo opposes 5G auction in 2019

The prospect of a 3.5 GHz frequency band auction for 5G during 2019 is not welcomed by Telefonica's VP of Corporate Affairs Camilla Tapias, reports Teletime. She explained that Vivo "still has to fulfil a lot of goals", adding that even in 2020 this would be a problem.

Telefonica Brasil sees signs of economic recovery

Telefonica Brasil (Vivo) already sees signs of an improving economy in Brazil, and along with the new regulatory framework for the telecom sector, this will lead to increased investments and should contribute to more positive results in 2019, reports Reuters. According to the current president of the company, Eduardo Navarro, the bill could be approved at the beginning of next year and would remove some obligations from current concession holders, such as the installation of public telephones.
