Telefonica Germany said it will start to operate 5G in ten more cities in October, including Duesseldorf, Stuttgart, Essen and Potsdam. The company began to operate 5G networks on 03 October in the five largest Germany cities of Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Frankfurt. It is using 150 5G sites and a total of around 450 antennas.
By the end of 2021, the company will set up over 2,000 5G mobile sites and around 6,000 5G antennas on 3.6 GHz frequencies. The company will also use Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) technology to expand coverage in rural areas. Frequencies that are currently still being used for 3G are gradually used for the 5G network. Telefonica plans to supply more than 30 percent of the German population with 5G by the end of next year and around half of the German population by the end of 2022. It will start to market 5G for commercial use on 06 October.
