Telenor names Asia chief Brekke its new CEO
Telenor has appointed Sigve Brekke its new CEO. Brekke joined the group in 1999 and is currently the head of Telenor's Asia operations. He will succeed Jon Fredrik Baksaas by 17 August. 

Baksaas steps down after 13 years as CEO. In September 2014, he extended his tenure for another year. Baksaas will continue as advisor to the board of directors until the end of 2016 and will serve as chairman of GSMA, the global industry organisation for mobile operators. 

Brekke's annual base salary will be NOK 5.9 million. He will also be entitled to a long-term incentive grant of 30 percent of his annual base salary. His maximum annual bonus will be 50 percent of his annual base salary.

Telenor CEO denies lying about education on CV

Telenor CEO Sigve Brekke has denied lying on his curriculum vitae (CV) about his qualifications, according to newspaper Verdens Gang on its website. He said he has never deliberately misled about his academic background, but that he had failed to notice an incorrect translation of his educational achievements from Norwegian to English, which he said he regretted.

The Vimpelcom Group's former CEO Jo Lunder has ruled himself out as a successor to Telenor Group CEO Fredrik Baksaas, according to an online excerpt from an article in Norwegian business newspaper Dagens Naeringsliv. Norway govt hints Telenor should consider naming woman CEO

Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry Monica Maeland said Telenor should pay special consideration to women when it chooses a successor to CEO Fredrik Baksaas, said VG Nett, the website of newspaper Verdens Gang. The Norwegian government owns 54 percent of the telecommunications operator. VG said the favourite internal candidate is Sigve Brekke, the man leading Telenor's Asian operations. VG claimed that Maeland had given a clear signal on the matter.

Telenor CEO accepts to stay until 2016

Telenor has asked CEO Jon Fredrik Baksaas to extend his contract until the end of 2015. Baksaas, who will become 60 years old in November, has accepted. From January 2016, he will act as special advisor to Telenor for 12 months, reporting to the board. It is not yet known who will replace him then as CEO.
