Telenor names new CEOs in Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh

Telenor has announced management changes across its Asian operations. The CEO of Telenor Myanmar, Sharad Mehrotra will be the new CEO of Thai operator Dtac, as Alexandra Reich leaves the company. In Bangladesh, deputy CEO and CMO of Grameenphone, Yasir Azman will take over the top job, as current CEO Michael Foley relocates to Africa, where his family is based. 

Mehrotra, a long-time Telenor executive who also previously headed the Indian operations, will take over at Dtac from February. Hans Martin Hoegh Henrichsen, currently Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Telenor Myanmar, will become acting CEO in Myanmar. 

Reich served as Dtac CEO since 20 August 2018, replacing Lars-Aake Valdemar Norling to help lead the restructuring at the company. She is leaving the group to pursue opportunities elsewhere. 

The changes in Bangladesh also take effect from 01 February. Azman will be the first Bangladeshi to lead Grameenphone. Foley is leaving Telenor after over five years with the group and previously serving as CEO of Telenor Pakistan.

Telenor launches Ultra Plus Offer in Pakistan

Telenor Pakistan has launched its Ultra Plus Offer for its mobile data service users. Staring 26 February 2020, customers can dial a special short code to receive 20GB for mobile data traffic per week for PKR 220. The offer is only available in selected districts, the operator said.

Telenor signs another workers' rights deal with UNI Global Union

Telenor said it has signed an agreement with Swiss-based UNI Global Union, which represents more than 20 million skills and service workers in more than 150 countries. The deal enhances the labour rights of Telenor's workforce of more than 20,000 in nine countries. It builds on pacts between UNI Global Union and Telenor signed in 2013 and 2015.

Norwegian fibre provider Lyse has named Tor Morten Osmundsen as the new CEO of Altibox, its ISP and television services arm. He replaces Thomas Skjelbred, who is moving to Singapore to become COO and deputy CEO at Telenor with responsibility for procurement and supply management.

Telenor Pakistan launches WhatsApp Offer

Telenor Pakistan has introduced a WhatsApp Offer in various cities across the country. Under this campaign, starting 11 February, customers will be charged PKR 5 per month for WhatsApp access. The offer is available in the cities of Azad Jammu Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan, Abbotabad, Astore, Batgram, Chitral, Diamer, Ghanche, Ghizer, Gilgit, Haripur, Hunza-Nagar, Kohistan, Lower Dir, Malakand, Mansehra, Shangla, Skardu, Swat, and Upper Dir.

Dtac's net profit jumps nearly 70% in 2019 on lower concession costs

Thai operator Total Access Communication (Dtac) saw its service revenues for the fourth quarter of 2019 grow 3.1 percent year-on-year, while core service revenues for 2019 slightly increased by 0.1 percent, driven by improved prepaid subscriber development with positive net additional prepaid subscribers in the fourth quarter and continuous growth in the postpaid segment. Telenor Pakistan adds 1 mln subscribers in Q4

Telenor Pakistan posted revenues of NOK 1.48 billion in the fourth quarter of 2019, up from NOK 1.77 billion in the year-earlier period. In Pakistan, the challenging macroeconomic environment, combined with the disallowance of the service fee from the second quarter 2019, continued to impact financial performance in line with developments in the third quarter, parent company Telenor reported.

Telenor Myanmar Q4 revenue grows to NOK 1.25 billion boosted by data usage

Telenor Myanmar posted total fourth-quarter revenues of NOK 1.66 billion in reported currency, up from NOK 1.25 billion a year earlier. Telenor put the exchange rate at MMK 1.00 to NOK 0.0059 in 2019, compared with NOK 0.0056 in 2018. Subscription and traffic revenues were reported at NOK 1.44 billion, up from NOK 1.04 billion. Telenor says revenue growth accelerated in the period, driven by increasing data usage and customer growth.

Telenor appoints Pakistan CEO Khan as head of Asia cluster

Telenor Group has announced that, effective 1 April, Irfan Khan, CEO of Telenor Pakistan, will assume an additional leadership role as Telenor Group executive vice president and cluster head for Emerging Asia. Telenor Myanmar has appointed Helge Oien as its chief financial officer. Current CFO, Caroline Yin Yin Htay, will continue in a new role in the company as chief business officer (CBO). In this role, she will be responsible for Telenor's focus on the business segment in Myanmar. Both appointments are effective 1 March.
