Telenor announced it will launch its 5G network in Sweden in October, the last of the four operators. The company said it will offer speeds of over 1 Gbps to start, with coverage in central Stockholm from the end of October. In 2021, the network will expand to other large cities, and the company aims to reach full 5G coverage, for more than 99 percent of Sweden's population, by 2023.
Customers on the Telenor Unlimited plan will be given access to 5G automatically. Telenor said this means up to half a million people can use the network at launch.
The operator said it's upgraded its network in Stockholm significantly in the past six months to prepare for the launch and ensure a good 5G experience from the start. It's using 80MHz of spectrum in the C-band for the 5G services.
The upgrade is part of a wider network expansion and modernization effort, which is expected to densify coverage with over 3,000 base stations. When the network expansion is completed in 2023, more than 99 percent of Sweden's population and over 90 percent of the territory will have access to 5G.
