Telenor's Johnsen joins Vimpelcom to head major markets
VimpelCom announced that it has appointed Kjell Morten Johnsen as Head of Major Markets. In this newly created role, he will be a member of the Group’s Executive Committee, responsible for VimpelCom’s businesses in Russia and Italy, and will report to CEO Jean-Yves Charlier. 

Kjell joins VimpelCom from Telenor, where he was responsible for Telenor's stake in VimpelCom, which is now up for sale. He served as head of Telenor Europe, CEO of Telenor Serbia as well as Senior Vice President and Head of Telenor Russia, Telenor Central & Eastern Europe. He was also a member of VimpelCom's supervisory board from 2011 until 2015 and PJSC’s board of directors from 2007 to 2013. Prior to entering the telecommunications industry in 2000, Kjell worked for Norsk Hydro in France and Ukraine, and Scandsea International in Norway and Russia.

Telenor prices Vimpelcom ADS offer at USD 3.50 each

Telenor said that the underwriters have priced its offering of 142.5 million Vimpelcom American Depositary Shares (ADS) in the US at USD 3.50 each, which would result in net proceeds to Telenor of USD 486.3 million. The ADS had closed at USD 3.62 on 15 September on Nasdaq.

Telenor starts selling Vimpelcom shares

Telenor said that it has commenced a public offering in the US of 142.5 million of its Vimpelcom American Depository Shares (ADS), at a price yet undetermined. Telenor currently owns approximately 580 million ADS, or 33 percent of Vimpelcom's total outstanding common shares. This transaction represents 24.5 percent of Telenor's holding, or 8.1 percent of VimpelCom's outstanding shares. Djezzy reports falling revenue and customers in Q2

VimpelCom reported a fall in revenue and customers at its Algerian subsidiary Djezzy for the second quarter. Overall revenue declined by 15 percent year-on-year to DZD 27.4 billion, while the customer base dropped by 4 percent to 16.3 million. In the same period, mobile service revenue dropped by 15 percent, as an increase in data revenue only partly offset the negative impact of lower ARPU and higher customer churn.

Pokemon Go! causes rise in Telenor customer service queries

Telenor Norway said the popularity of Nintendo's augmented reality game 'Pokemon Go!' has led to a rise in calls to customer services. In the first few weeks since it went live, traffic to customer services doubled. Callers have included a 77-year-old man who wanted to know why the game had stopped working and found he had accidentally switched off his mobile data, and an 80-year-old ringing for help in setting up the game so that she could go out and play it.

Vimpelcom sees service revenue slow in Q2 to fall of 1%

Vimpelcom said it expects to achieve only the lower end of its full-year targets, after a slowdown in service revenues in Q2. Its total revenue fell 16 percent year-on-year to USD 2.156 billion in the three months to June, and service revenue dropped 17 percent to USD 2.089 billion. In addition to negative currency effects, the company saw an organic revenue decline of 2 percent in its home market Russia and organic sales fell 15 percent in Algeria. Telenor in talks to sell Vimpelcom, sets sight on SE Asia

Telenor said it is in talks to sell its USD 2.42 billion stake in Vimpelcom, and that it would be targeting countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines for future growth. Telenor CEO Sigve Brekke said in an interview in Singapore that the company was in contact with potential buyers but declined to disclose any names. The company, which hasn't appointed financial advisers, is seeking to sell the holding soon, Brekke said, without elaborating.
