Telesat, Vodafone, Gilat demonstrate 5G backhaul over LEO satellite

Global satellite operator Telesat, Vodafone and the University of Surrey, UK, have demonstrated that Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites can provide effective backhaul transport for mobile network operators (MNOs). This includes providing backhaul systems for 5G. Gilat Satellite Networks provided modem technology for the test. 

The partners conducted a live test of 5G services using a LEO satellite in April. This saw the Telesat Phase 1 LEO satellite connected to the University of Surrey's 5G test bed network. The trial was supported by Vodafone engineers, with the company also providing funding and arranged licensing.

The test results showed a network reaction time of 18-40 milliseconds, with the demonstration supporting video chatting, web browsing and simultaneous streaming of up to 8K videos. The partners also demonstrated a key 5G future use case by transferring 4K video to the 5G network edge.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has chosen Mitsubishi Electric as the prime contract for its small satellite programme. Under the Innovative Satellite Technology Demonstration-2 programme, Mitsubish will create a standardised platform for designing, manufacturing and operating small 100 kg-class satellites. Gilat reports higher revenues in Q3, lowers FY guidance on delayed orders

Gilat Satellite Networks said revenues for the third quarter rose to USD 63.4 million from 59.7 million the year before and that the operating profit rose over 17 percent to USD 7.0 million. The net profit meanwhile slipped over 27 percent to USD 6.3 million or USD 0.11 per share, due to a one-off tax benefit last year of USD 4.1 million. The adjusted EBITDA advanced 10.6 percent to USD 10.1 million.

Telesat grows Q3 revenues 4%, EBITDA up 8%

Canadian satellite operator Telesat reported revenue of CAD 237 million for the third quarter, up 4 percent year-on-year due to higher revenue from its two satellites launched in 2018 as well as short-term services to another satellite operator. With operating costs down 6 percent, the adjusted EBITDA for the period rose 8 percent to CAD 203 million.
