Telstra unveils faster 4GX service

Telstra has launched its new 4GX service, which it said will bring higher speeds and extra 4G coverage, using Telstra’s new 700MHz and older 1800MHz spectrum.

As it unveiled the name, Telstra announced the switch on of 4GX services in parts of Hobart and Brisbane, adding to the 4GX coverage already available in parts of Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin and ten regional centres.

Telstra announced 4GX services will be switched later this week in Albany, Ulladulla, Murray Bridge, Narrawallee, Shepparton, Bateman’s Bay, Swansea, Bunbury, Port Macquarie and Chinchilla, bringing to 26 the number of communities with the service. The operator wants to bring 4GX to at least 50 regional centres by New Year’s Day.

In 4GX areas, people with compatible devices will be able to access download speeds of 2-100 Mbps with category 6 devices and of 2-75 Mbps with category 4 devices. The service will bring coverage to more offices, homes and lifts, as well as to more regions, and double Telstra’s 4G bandwidth.

Director of devices Andrew Volard said the 4GX name was important as it would help customers understand where the new 4G service is available and with which devices. Volard added that 4GX will allow customers to experience 4G in more places, with the low band spectrum offering extra in-building coverage and creating better 4G coverage in rural and regional areas than Telstra’s existing 4G.

The will also serve as a foundation for future the introduction of extra mobile calling features like Voice over LTE (VoLTE), HD Video calling and multi-media calling using VoLTE technology.
