Thailand raises more than THB 100 billion in 5G spectrum auction
Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has raised THB 100.5 billion (VAT excluded) in its 5G spectrum auction held on 16 February. The regulator auctioned 49 licences of three spectrum bands, including 700MHz, 2600MHz and 26GHz. Of the 49 licences put on auction, 48 were taken up, leaving just a single licence for the 26GHz spectrum unsold, The Nation reports. There were 27 licences in the 26GHz frequency band on auction.

Five operators participated in the auction, namely Advanced Info Service’ mobile unit AWN, dtac TriNet, TrueMove H Universal Communication (TUC), and state-owned operators CAT Telecom and TOT.

The NBTC announced that AWN has won 2x5 MHz of bandwidth in the 700 MHz band for a final bid price of THB 17.15 billion (VAT excluded); 100 MHz in the 2500-2600 MHz band for THB 19.56 billion; as well as 1200 MHz of 25.2-26.4 GHz spectrum for THB 5.34 billion. 

Dtac TriNet won two lots of 26 GHz frequencies, in the spectrum range of 26.8-27.0 GHz. The total bandwidth of 200 MHz had a final bid price of THB 910.4 million. 

True Move H secured spectrum in the 2600-2690 MHz range at a price of THB 17.87 billion, and 26 GHz frequencies in the bands 24.3-25.1 GHz at a price of THB 3.57 billion. The total cost of its bids is THB 21.44 billion. 

NBTC secretary-general Takorn Tantasith said the NBTC board will approve the bid results on 19 February, and the winning bidders can obtain the licences after that. The NBTC initially planned to auction four spectrum ranges, including the 1800 MHz band. However, none of the bidders showed interest in the 1800 MHz bandwidth. Therefore, the NBTC auctioned off only three bands in its 16 February auction.

The license covers the frequency range 733-738 MHz paired with 788-793 MHz (2x10 MHz bandwidth), and will be valid for 15 years.

Advanced Wireless Network (AWN), a subsidiary of Thai operator AIS, reports it has made the payment for its 26GHz spectrum license, totaling THB 5.34 billion. The NBTC is now expected to issue the 26GHz license to AWN. AWN won a spectrum license in the 25.2-26.4GHz (1200MHz bandwidth) frequency band in the auction held a year ago, and the payment was required within one year. The license will be valid for 15 years.

AIS receives 700 MHz spectrum license

Thai operator Advanced Info Service (AIS) has announced that its subsidiary Advanced Wireless Network (AWN) has received its 700 MHz spectrum license. The license covers the frequency range 723-733 MHz paired with 778-788 MHz (2x10 MHz bandwidth) and is valid for a period of 15 years. The total spectrum price is THB 17.58 billion (excluding VAT) to be paid in 10 annual installments or THB 1.75 billion for each installment.

Thailand's National Telecom (NT), the new merged entity of state-owned operators CAT Telecom and TOT, plans to become one of the top three mobile operators on the local market by end-2021, The Bangkok Post reports, citing Buddhipongse Punnakanta, Thailand;s minister of digital economy and society. NT is also in talks with mobile operators Advanced Info Service (AIS) and True Move H Universal Communication to share their infrastructure on 700 MHz spectrum.

TOT to complete merger with CAT Telecom by 13 January 2021

The merger of Thai state-owned operators TOT and CAT Telecom has been set for completion by 13 January at the latest. TOT and CAT are yet to decide on the date for the merger ceremony, somewhere between 4 and 13 January, The Bangkok Post reports, citing digital economy and society minister Buddhipongse Punnakanta. The merger of TOT and CAT Telecom will create a new entity called National Telecom (NT), which is expected to launch operations by 13 January next year.

True Group posted total revenues of THB 33 billion for the third quarter of 2020, which represents a decline of 10 percent year-on-year and 2.6 percent quarter-on-quarter.
