Twitter is rolling out a new feature called Fleets, offering tweets that disappear after 24 hours. After testing in several markets earlier this year, including Brazil, Italy, India and South Korea, Fleets are rolling out worldwide to all Twitter users.
The concept of the disappearing message started with Snapchat and has more recently spread to other messaging apps like Instagram and WhatsApp. For Twitter, Fleets are seen as a way to make it easier for people to join the platform and share 'fleeting' thoughts.
The company said some people are put off tweeting because it is so public and permanent. They also feel pressure to collect retweets and likes. Early experience with Fleets shows people talk more on Twitter - an important element to boosting the company's ad metrics.
Fleets can include text, photos and videos and be used to respond to tweets. Stickers and live broadcasting will be added later in Fleets.
