Up to quarter of Dutch SVoD subscribers share account outside home

Up to a quarter of Dutch subscribers to SVoD services share the account with someone outside their household, according to new figures from the Telecompaper Consumer Insights panel. This is much lower for the Fox or Ziggo Sports OTT services, which are more often shared within the same household.

Account sharing outside the household is not always permitted by streaming services. This means fewer subscribers to their services, hurting their revenues and return. Some allow an account to be shared by several people, such as Videloand, which promotes use of its service by up to five people, or Netflix, which charges more for such a subscription.

The Telecompaper figures from February show that 24 percent of Netflix subscribers and 25 percent of Videoland customers share the account with someone outside their household. Almost one in five (19%) Disney+ subscribers do the same.

The picture is different for OTT services focused on sports. For Fox Sports Go and Ziggo Sport Totaal Go, the online services included with the premium TV channels, only 8 and 5 percent of respective customers share the account access.

Within the household, customers are more likely to share the account. This ranges from 35 percent of Netflix subscribers and 39 percent of Disney+ users to a quarter of Videloand customers.
