UPC to switch to Swisscom mobile network from 2019

UPC Switzerland will use Swisscom's network for its mobile services starting from 2019. The cable operator has offered mobile services using Salt's network since spring 2015, and since then has acquired over 100,000 customers. Now, UPC has decided to use Swisscom in the future, on the grounds that Swisscom offers the best Swiss mobile network, according to the Connect test.

UPC Switzerland completes migration of mobile customers to Swisscom network

UPC Switzerland has completed the migration of UPC Mobile customers from the Salt mobile network to that of Swisscom network. The switch was announced at the beginning of 2018. UPC is preparing a new mobile service portfolio. It claims to be the only operator in Switzerland now able to offer top connectivity speed for both fixed-line and mobile across its entire footprint.

The big four operators on the Swiss market reported a combined revenue drop of 1.2 percent in Q2 2018. Profitability grew, both sequentially and year-on-year. Capex investments were up, while free cash flow remained at a decent level of 21 percent of revenues. Sunrise and Salt managed to grow their revenues. Sunrise's free cash flow generation is significantly lower than Swisscom's and especially UPC's, but Salt's is close to UPC's, testament of a very sound cost base.

Swiss telecoms market Q1: Sunrise and Salt grow at expense of Swisscom and UPC; overall profitability high

The four largest operators on the Swiss market had combined revenues of CHF 3.24 billion in Q1 2018. That was down 0.5 percent year-on-year, but the combined EBITDA margin was to 40.8 percent (Q1 2017: 42.2%). With capex down to just 15.1 percent of revenues, at CHF 489 million, free cash flow peaked at CHF 835 billion. Sunrise and Salt are growing at the expense of Swisscom and UPC CH, as the market embraces FMC (fixed/mobile convergence).

Swisscom wins CHIP mobile network test

For the third time, Swisscom has won the mobile network test by CHIP magazine, organised in Switzerland for the third year in a row. Swisscom was the overall winner and also scored best in the telephony, mobile internet, LTE network and long-distance trains categories. Swisscom also won the mobile network test by connect magazine.

Swiss mobile users loyal, but monthly spend falling - survey

The share of Swiss mobile users with monthly spending of over CHF 40 has been gradually decreasing, dropping from 70 percent to 67.2 percent in the past year, according to an annual survey by the comparison site Bonus.ch among 2,500 respondents. At the same time, the number of people paying less than CHF 40 a month increased from 29.5 percent to 32.8 percent. For pre-paid offers, the number of customers paying less than CHF 15 a month increased from 58.4 to 63.9 percent.

Salt considers lawsuit against UPC Switzerland over switch to Swisscom mobile grid

Swiss operator Salt is considering a lawsuit against UPC Switzerland because of its decision to switch from using Salt's mobile network to that of Swisscom from 2019, Salt's CEO Andreas Schonenberger told Handelszeitung. The early announcement was not only unnecessary but also breaches the contract, he said.

T-Mobile Austria to acquire UPC Austria

T-Mobile Austria has agreed to acquire cable operator UPC Austria from Liberty Global for an enterprise value of EUR 1.9 billion. The transaction will create an integrated quad-play provider for broadband, mobile and fixed communications, TV and entertainment products. With this acquisition, Deutsche Telekom is taking another major step to realise its strategy to become a fully converged operator within its European footprint, following recent deals also in the Netherlands and Poland.

Liberty Global exploring sale of Swiss and Austrian arms - report

The cable giant Liberty Global is exploring a sale of its Swiss and Austrian arms, reported the Daily Telegraph. The owner of Virgin Media has begun work on a potential disposal of UPC Austria and UPC Switzerland, according to sources familiar with its plans. The discussions are understood to be at an early stage and may not lead to a transaction.

P3 communications and the magazine 'connect' have published the results of network quality testing in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. The winners of the test are the operators A1 in Austria, Deutsche Telekom in Germany and Sunrise and Swisscom in Switzerland.

UPC Switzerland/Austria Q3 revenues up 1.2 percent

UPC Switzerland and Austria posted revenues of CHF 340 million for the third quarter, up 1.2 percent from Q3 2016. The number of fixed network and mobile subscriptions increased by 14,000 in the third quarter to 2.62 million. Together with the steadily growing segments of mobile and business customers, the new Swiss channel, MySports contributed to this growth. As part of the Autostrada investment programme, in Q3 UPC connected another 15,000 homes to its fibre-optic network in Switzerland and Austria.
