The US House of Representatives passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act on 6 November. The bill will see the distribution of USD 1.85 trillion over ten years to a number of public works programmes, including the expansion of broadband internet. It now goes to President Joe Biden for signature.
Under the bill, USD 65 billion will go towards building infrastructure for high-speed internet for every household in the US. The White House said the legislation will also support lower prices for internet service and help close the digital divide.
The act will also allocate money to rebuild roads, bridges and railways, extend access to clean drinking water, tackle the climate crisis and environmental problems, and invest in communities “that have too often been left behind”, the government said. The legislation also seeks to ease inflationary pressure and strengthen supply chains by improving ports, airports, rail and roads in the US.
