US Senate drop plans to continue ban on ZTE

US Senators have eliminated language from a defense bill that would have reinstated a ban on ZTE, responding to a call by President Donald Trump not to oppose his reprieve of ZTE. The Chinese manufacturer has since paid USD 1.4 billion in fines and resumed operations. 

Many in the Senate objected to allowing ZTE to come back, viewing the move as a security risk. But Senate Republican leadership has now let go of its opposition to ZTE being reinstated. Some senators rued the move, saying that if the Senate is not willing to take on ZTE, how will it take on a much larger company like Huawei.

Optical transport network equipment sales fall in Q2 following ZTE ban

The global optical transport network equipment market declined in the second quarter of 2018 due to the impact of the US supplier ban ZTE, resulting in a 13 percent year on year fall in revenue from China, according to a study from Dell'Oro Group. However, demand outside of China continued to improve, led by Huawei, Ciena and Nokia. The report predicted that optical revenue from China is set to increase substantially in the second half of the year now that the ZTE trade ban has been lifted.

ZTE has resumed operations after the US government lifted a ban on sales to the Chinese company. ZTE paid a USD 1 billion fine last month and deposited another USD 400 million in escrow, the Department of Commerce confirmed, in order to put an end to the order denying US companies to sell to the company.

Xiaomi keeps sights on US market, hopes to avoid political turmoil

Xiaomi said it has connections in the US that will help the company avoid the political obstacles other smartphone makers from China are facing, Reuters reported, citing a statement from senior VP Wang Xiang. The company is firmly set on entering the US market next year and is adding engineering resources to develop versions of its handsets that are compatible with US mobile networks. Wang added that talks with US carrier had not yet produced concrete agreements.

The US Senate has rejected the deal President Donald Trump reached with ZTE, and vote to reinstate the seven-year ban on the company, which will not be able to buy USD components over that period, the Wall Street Journal reported. ZTE was banned for violating US Sanctions and because it was suspected by the Commerce Department of spying on people. The company has denied the accusation.
