Verizon adopts bandwidth throttling in new mobile contracts

Verizon Wireless has changed its contract terms to allow the mobile operator to reduce mobile broadband speeds for heavy users. The change, which applies only to new contracts, took effect 3 February, when the company also started iPhpne sales, reports the Wall Street Journal. The new contract terms allow Verizon to slow down connections for customers that fall in the top 5 percent of bandwidth use. For those users, Verizon said "we may reduce your data throughput speeds periodically for the remainder of your then current and immediately following billing cycle..." Verizon said the throttling will only be applied in areas where a user is affecting surrounding customers. A Verizon Wireless spokesman denied the policy was related to the debut of the iPhone.
