Vodacom Tanzania has appointed Hisham Hendi as acting managing director from 1 September, until its earlier appointment, Sylvia Mulinge, can take office. Hendi joined Vodacom Tanzania in 2016 as Director of the Consumer Business Unit and has over fifteen years of commercial experience in the global telecommunications industry, including senior commercial positions at Vodafone and Vodacom Group.
The appointment comes despite Kenyans sending lobbyists to Tanzania to try and intervene on immigration issues that have prevented Mulinge from taking over the role five months since her appointment. According to local media reports, the state has suggested that there are Tanzanians who could do the job, while other reports say Mulinge had not satisfied all the requirements for a permit. Mulinge was to take over from the outgoing MD Ian Ferrao, a UK national.
