Vodafone CEO calls on web firms to respect national laws

Vodafone Group CEO Vittorio Colao has called on internet companies to comply with national laws on consumer protection and privacy. In a letter in the Financial Times, Colao said it was vital that European governments were able to combat cybercrime and safeguard the security of their citizens. He said it was important for consumers to know that their privacy and personal data are protected and for content owners to know that their copyright will be respected. He argues that rules will not restrain the internet, but instead will help it flourish based on respect for ownership, privacy, human and social rights. They will also encourage more investment in broadband networks.
