WhatsApp adds support for voice, video calls on desktop

WhatsApp has added support for voice and video calls on its desktop app. The company said this responds to more and more users calling over the mobile app in the past year. 

On New Year’s Eve, the app broke a record for the most calls made in a single day, with 1.4 billion voice and video calls. With the expansion to the bigger desktop screen, it will be easier for people to connect in person, the company said. 

The same as on the mobile app, voice and video calls on desktop WhatsApp are end-to-end encrypted. Only one-to-one calls are supported to start, to ensure consistent quality, but WhatsApp said it plans to add group calls later.

WhatsApp has released more information about its planned update of its privacy policy. Users of the app will see a banner appear that they can tap to view the policy and a list of FAQs. In addition, the company is using the Status section in the app to provide more information on its policies.

WhatsApp updates terms to require data sharing with Facebook

WhatsApp is updating its terms and conditions for both iOS and Android users, including how it processes user data and when it shares this with other Facebook companies. WhatsApp users were informed about the change through an in-app notice telling them about the app's updated mandatory terms of service and privacy policy. They need to accept the changes by 8 February if they want to continue using the app.

WhatsApp announced plans to upgrade its messaging services for businesses, saying the covid-19 pandemic has shown a need for a fast and efficient way to talk to customers and conduct sales. The company noted that 175 million people message a WhatsApp business account every day. WhatsApp will in particular focus on new shopping options and Facebook hosting services for business customers and will start charging for some of the services it provides to businesses using its messaging platform.

WhatsApp rolls out search option to check info in forwarded messages

WhatsApp said it's piloting a way to double check information in forwarded messages. Users can tap a magnifying glass button in the chat to search the messages on the web and look for related information. This may help people find news results or other sources of information about content they received, rather than relying on sometimes unreliable messages that have been forwarded many times.

WhatsApp Business introduces QR codes to trigger chats

Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp has announced the launch of two new features designed to help businesses with an official account on the service keep in touch with customers by scanning a QR code. WhatsApp has launched app calls for up to eight people, after testing the feature in beta. People can use the function to make video or voice calls from 4-8 people at a time. People had previously only been able to call up to four people at the same time.
